2.0 PROGRAMME STRUCTURE AND PURPOSE

In this postgraduate programme the Institute of Development studies provides training in the analysis of major issues in the theory and practice of agricultural and rural development. The key features of the teaching of this programme include an interdisciplinary framework, drawing concepts and approaches taken from different disciplines i.e. economics, sociology, political science etc. and also sharpens candidates towards the understanding of the international, national and local level agrarian problems, strategies and policies and focus on the gaps between policy and practice that arise from actual rural conditions.
The central concern of this programme is the critical analysis of strategies and policies to reduce rural poverty and to generate economic growth. This requires a focus on the relations between agricultural, rural and national development strategies in a rapidly changing macroeconomic and international environment and their consequences for various groups.
Furthermore, the M.A. in Rural Development programme aims at providing the candidates with advanced level of knowledge to the study of development and change aiming at preparing the candidates for a higher level of attainment in teaching, research, administration and management of public and private institutions.
Lastly, this programme pays attention to some previously neglected areas of rural development, such as rural industrialization and non-farm employment, agro-industrial development, population and development, sustainability of agriculture, gender and development.
